Stocks 101Return to index of stories... |
TR 1: Historically stocks out-perform all other investments. Since 1926 stocks have returned an annual average of 10-percent.. Which is why so many people are walking down Wall Street. TR 2: A whole industry has cropped up…catering to those looking to make their money grow. TR 3: From drive-time, to on-line, to on the shelf…MONEY and how to make it has become a national obsession. TR4 priced earnings ratio -current yield, dividends, IPO's. The lexicon may sound confusing -but beginning investors say its not as difficult as you might think. CHRIS PANK: It's not a mystery…it doesn't have to be a mystery. All you have to do is sit and read, watch tv and just open your mind, start investing a little bit at a time, see what a company had done in the past. 1:28:32 TR5: 62-year-old Chris Pank is a retired teacher from Milford. Like a growing number of Americans he's turned to an investment club to learn the basics. :Jim Davis: 31:27 I was making money but they were making more money. TR7: So, they joined the Rise and Shine Investment Club in Nashua and became their own stock-pickers. Jim: 1:33:01 you get a list of companies…and you find one that interests you and then you tend to research on it, do the history of the company. Delores: 1:47:31 we feel like we are using some of the same information brokers are using when they make decisions. 45:53 for most part…Walgrens looking good and it's a hold status.and last month it was 47 cents…considering Hurricane things looking well for walgrens 46:05 * graphic 45:36 TR8: The group meets monthly - comes armed with research - and relies on roberts rules of order: Joan: 02:17 the goal of the club is really education. We only put the equivalaent of 30 dollars a month basically. So, you're not going to get rich from the club itself, but what we hope we'l do is get enuf education that they'll have their own portfolios and take off from there. 02:36 TR9: Joan Connacher is the President of the NH chapter of Better Investing - a non-profit group that seeks to empower Individual investors. Beth: 1:48:03 do you find that you tend to buy stocks that you are connected to. Delores: We do…in fact, lets say we have a bed and bath beyond stock. We go in and look at the store and we determine howmuch business its doing and should we buy this and do they look like they' doing okay now.we do that. And home depot…we always go there. Nats in Meeting: Nats: 28:07 home depot nat snd… quarterly earnings out for end of july up by 11;7 percent…both above our projections. Nats: 29:07 I know we have nothing on Loews we have home depot buying some more at this time I think. Beth: 1:26:33 Current events seem to play a big role in picking stocks and watching how they're progressing. CHRIS: I would say definetly. For example Hurricane Katrina…I would never have gone and said to people here, let's buy stock in Lowes . |
